"Moving" towards a New Year

Break is over (so quickly!) and the normal routine has started again. I started back to work yesterday and Jon started his new job working for the state of Arizona.

We left last Monday and traveled to DC to start moving his stuff from his storage unit to a 14' UHaul he had rented. Can you picture me moving anything of substance at all? Since I am such a weakling I could barely help him move anything at all. I begged, on more than one ocassion, for a random guy to help Jon move his heaviest item. Now Jon's back is really bothering him. Sad day!

As we were making our treck across the country I found several places I would NOT want to live: Illinois is boring, flat, and kinda ugly, as well as the upper part of Texas we drove through. Oklahoma should be completely turned into lava, but more on why later! The coolest place was St. Louis and we both thought the arch was pretty phenominal looking. We were blessed with perfect weather and I was lucky to have great company during the entire trip!

However, as we were halfway through our trip our UHaul truck started to have problems around Tulsa, OK. To make a long story short our transmission was completely shot and we had to transfer all of our belongings from truck A to truck B by ourselves. UHaul's compensation policy is awful and unworthy of all of our troubles (time lost on the road and additional expenses). We are planning on drafting a letter to the company. Only time will tell if they make these two customers satisfied.

I hope that we can get Jon settled in his new apartment by this weekend and take in a movie or two we both want to see: Phantom (me) Life Aquatic (him) and finish our UHaul letter.

I'd love to hear from all of you!

Uhaul is awful.

When I moved to CA I was supposed to get a little trailer from them because I didn't have much stuff. I arranged it all while home in Alaska, then had a week in Arizona to get ready to move. When I went to my appointment to get the hitch installed they had no idea who I was. When I tried to reschedule that fell apart too. They were perfectly happy to have me driving back and forth from Glendale to Tempe for no good reason. They'd offered to give me a truck for the same cost, but when I tried to take them up they wouldn't do it. Fortunately Kevin was helping me and got on the phone with his German Shepherd alter ego to make them do it. They still overcharged me by a lot and I never got the money back. When we got to CA we almost weren't able to get rid of the stupid truck and it was sheer luck that we could get it dropped off somewhere without getting too lost. Moving is so stressful you think they could be more helpful. I hope you can get something from them...I gave up. I don't think I'll use them again...MAYBE for an in-town move, but I would be very reluctant.
